Information
Kelsey Elder is a typographer, graphic designer, and educator based in Providence, Rhode Island (USA). His practice explores type design, visual systems, and type technology, with a particular interest in how typographic tools shape pedagogy, knowledge sharing, and collective experience across static, kinetic, and multilingual contexts. He regularly leads workshops and lectures on type design and toolmaking in academic and professional settings. His teaching has been recognized with the 2024 Communication Design Educator Award from Design Incubation.
He is currently an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He has previously taught at Carnegie Mellon University, Purchase College, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, with additional study in type design at the University of Reading and the Plantin Institute of Typography.
In addition to teaching, he runs a small studio with his partner, Kelsey Dusenka, titled Addition Projects. The studio works across cultural, educational, and commercial contexts, collaborating with institutions, artists, and clients such as Carnegie Mellon University Press, Center for Arts & Society, Coterie Baby, Cranbrook Art Museum, CrossFit, Open Road Tuning, Rhymesayers Entertainment, and others.
